lactose intolerance symptoms and questions?

Question by Teekee Weekee: lactose intolerance symptoms and questions?
Is there such a thing as a mild case of lactose intolerance? In the past couple of months I have noticed that I get an upset stomach after drinking milk, but I take in other dairy products like cheese and ice cream and am fine? Like this evening a few hours after dinner I had a small cup of milk and cookies and am now feeling a little bit of an upset stomach? Is that possibly lactose intolerance?

Answer by Doctor J

Having Stomach Issues, Throwing up, constant nausea only when standing up not when laying down so much?

Question by collegesucksass: Having Stomach Issues, Throwing up, constant nausea only when standing up not when laying down so much?
I am wondering if anyone else has had these symptoms before in their life. Back in December (about 11 Months ago) my stomach started really really hurting early in the morning and I would get up and I would start throwing up every single morning. This lasted for about 3 months while i went in and out of Doctors, Gastrologists, and ER’s…

It finally went away after about another 2 months…(I started smoking pot which really helped a lot)…anyways I have quit since for the most part (except for last night) and my stomach issues started coming up again. This time its a little different though. Before my stomach would hurt all day, and now it hurts in the morning and then goes away by afternoon after taking nothing…I went to the doctor twice now and they have prescribed me the following:

* Zofran
* Xanax
* Levsin
* Zegerid

PS. My mom died a couple of months ago and I am only 22…we were best friends and it really didnt affect me after a few days, but once i started feeling sick again, i lost it and started having panic attacks 5-10 times per day where i cant stop my breathing and there is lots of crying.

I really just want to feel better. I don’t like feeling like this because I can concentrate on whatever I am doing at the time. If there is anyone out there that has been through something similar or if there is a doctor on here that could possibly give me some hints as to whats wrong because I have heard everything from Diverticulitis – Stomach Cancer – Stress – Anxiety/Stress and a plethora of others like constipation and what not.

Thanks you very much for taking the time to read this.

Charlie

Oh ya, I haven’t been having diarrhea until this morning when I went to the bathroom…it looked like my poop was Black…which I have heard is not good…but it was black and green…so I don’t know…Anyways. all I have been able to eat is Jello (red) Gatorade (blue), one piece of toast, I got stoned last night and ate a small piece of pizza only because I hadn’t eaten anything in two day…and one of those frozen pops.

I have diabetes in my family, some heart problems, I lead a pretty sedentary lifestyle although recently I have been trying to change that.

Again thank you…and my stomach is feeling better…a little better after taking those combinations minus the Zegerid cause I was told to take it when I am feeling better.

Hmm. It sounds like the doctors think it’s all in your head — that it’s depression and stress over you mom’s passing away. I’m not sure that’s true. It probably is, if all this started AFTER she died. If it DID, this is your body’s way of dealing with feelings you try to ignore — making you feel you’ve lost control of your life. The panic attacks, etc. are related to this type stress. You MAY even have given yourself an ulcer by worrying so much.

As for the nausea, there are a number of things that cause it. People get nauseous when the haven’t eaten in a while, and their blood sugar drops suddenly. They get nausea as a side effect to meds; or because they’re ill. A weird reason is due to consipation. If you can’t go for more than 2 days, you have it. What that means, is that your colon is so impacted it can no longer absorb anything you eat. That alone would account for the throwing up. That happened to me, and all I DID was throw up.

It’s like taking a tube, and filling it up, then packing it down till it’s solid, and still trying to put more in. It won’t go, so anything you try just comes back out. Your body has an accending colon, and a descending colon; the descending colon uses the anal canal [attached to your rectum] in order to remove it’s waste buildup. When this process gets impacted, a person is nausous until the problem is fixed, ususally by an enema ordered by a doctor, or by taking laxatives.
The laxatives gave me diarrehea, but with the blockage finally gone, the nausea and throwing up went away. That MAY be your problem where the throwing up is concerned.

As for the no eating, try drinking a chocolate ENSURE protein drink. They come in small bottles, and taste best when really cold. And stay away from the vanilla flavor — it tastes gross. Hopefully, it will help settle your stomach as it did mine. My nausea and pain was due to the side effects I got from chemotherapy. I had no interest in food, even though I was starving. The IDEA of being able to eat was there, but actually EATING made me nauseous. YOURS sounds more stress-related.

If you feel a little better after moving your bowels along [colon function], then try eating a little soup. Add a slice of bread with peanut butter on it, toast, or just eat the peanut butter. Peanut butter also has the protein your body needs. Forget the jello, all it is, is sugar. Also, drink a lot of water if you can. Your body and blood need water in order to survive, especially your blood. Water also washing any toxins in your body away by flushing out your kidneys.

As for the crying, etc., that is because you are depressed over your mom. Try saying prayers; going to her grave site and tallking to her — leave a favorite flower there — then go places the 2 of you went, and remind yourself WHY the 2 of you liked it. Any time you feel food will make the pain of losing her go away, push those thoughts aside. Take up walking as exercise instead. Mainly because after 20 minutes or so, your body releases endorphines from exercise, that makes a person feel more relaxed. I hope some of this helps. It helped me. Especially the protein drink and exercise.

First of all….stop self diagnosing. You aren’t trained to and there is a reason why the internet isn’t for medical diagnosis.

You need to see a doctor. They will be able to examine you, run tests, diagnose and treat you. WE are not trained to do that.

You need to go to the ER or a clinic right away. It could be serious or it could be nothing….but you need to be seen and diagnosed.

This is my college application essay, what are my chances of getting into colleges?

Question by : This is my college application essay, what are my chances of getting into colleges?
I would like to share with you something about my current medical situation. Ordinarily I would not do so, as I am an intensely private person, but I now accept that my physical limitations have quite possibly impacted my high school performance in a negative manner, and I feel that it is only fair that you have this information. Therefore, I am reluctantly going to allow access to information that I would never, otherwise, speak of.

For the past several years, I have been afflicted by a physical situation that has sometimes interfered with my ability to focus, both in the classroom and out. I do not wish to be too specific about the symptoms of my disease, except to say that they are digestive in nature and sometimes require me to spend long periods of time in the Ladies’ Room. Despite my terrible discomfort, I refused to accept that there might be something wrong with me, and would not seek treatment. I know now that I should have been less determined to suffer in silence and more willing to accept help. Finally, my parents insisted on bringing the matter to the attention of a physician. I was tested, over a period of several weeks, for colon cancer, Crohn’s Disease, intestinal obstructions, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus, Heliocobacter pylori (commonly known as ulcer), celiac sprue (commonly known as wheat allergy), lactose intolerance, gallstones, bile duct stones, sclerosing cholangitis (the narrowing of the bile ducts), “Sphincter of Oddi” dysfunction and pancreatitis. You can imagine how relieved I was to learn that I had none of these terrible diseases.

Finally, I received the diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

This article is about a functional disorder. For bowel inflammation, see Inflammatory bowel disease.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS or spastic colon) is a diagnosis of exclusion. It is a functional bowel disorder characterized by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits in the absence of any detectable organic cause.[1] In some cases, the symptoms are relieved by bowel movements.[2] Diarrhea or constipation may predominate, or they may alternate (classified as IBS-D, IBS-C or IBS-A, respectively). IBS may begin after an infection (post-infectious, IBS-PI), a stressful life event, or onset of maturity without any other medical indicators.

Although there is no cure for IBS, there are treatments that attempt to relieve symptoms, including dietary adjustments, medication and psychological interventions. Patient education and a good doctor-patient relationship are also important.[2]

Several conditions may present as IBS including coeliac disease, fructose malabsorption,[3] mild infections, parasitic infections like giardiasis,[4] several inflammatory bowel diseases, functional chronic constipation, and chronic functional abdominal pain. In IBS, routine clinical tests yield no abnormalities, although the bowels may be more sensitive to certain stimuli, such as balloon insufflation testing. The exact cause of IBS is unknown. The most common theory is that IBS is a disorder of the interaction between the brain and the gastrointestinal tract, although there may also be abnormalities in the gut flora or the immune system.[5][6]

IBS does not lead to more serious conditions in most patients.[7][8][9][10][11] However, it is a source of chronic pain, fatigue, and other symptoms and contributes to work absenteeism.[12][13] Researchers have reported that the high prevalence of IBS,[14][15][16] in conjunction with increased costs, produces a disease with a high societal cost.[17] It is also regarded as a chronic illness and can dramatically affect the quality of a sufferer’s life.

I’ve suffered from IBS for years due to being too nervous and eating crap. I’d be a work and have an attack, I’d be on a date and have an attack, I’d be home on a Saturday doing nothing and have an attack. It was so debilitating I didn’t want to go anywhere or eat anything except at home. I wanted nothing more than the pain to stop and my own bathroom at those times and it got embarrassing. I tried everything over the counter and Doctors prescribed pills that made me worse in other ways. Best natural products I found for any ailment is Dr. Schultz’s at Herbdoc.com. If you want the problem solved forever then try his stuff it’s worth the price. Like he says “health is freedom”. Good luck.
